Start checking your breast health at 40, not at 50
In your 40s, no invitation for a breast check arrives, and it is easy to take that silence as a sign there is nothing to think about yet. You do not have to wait to be asked. If you are 40 or over, you can start checking now:
- The NHS invites you at 50. In Scotland the first screening invitation arrives between the ages of 50 and 53, and then every three years after that. Women in their 40s are not routinely invited.
- Your risk rises well before that. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the rate of new diagnoses climbs steeply from your 30s into your 40s. That step up is what makes 40 the age to start.
- You can book privately, today. A routine breast check at our Aberdeen clinic gives you a breast examination and a 3D mammogram in the same visit, with no GP referral needed and no waiting list to join.
A check once a year is a reasonable interval for most women in their 40s who have no symptoms. Your doctor will tell you if you should be seen sooner or more often, for example if there is a family history of breast cancer.

Breast examination
Your doctor takes a short history and examines both breasts. Allow around 15 minutes for this part of the visit.
Mammogram
Your 3D mammogram is carried out by our mammographer in the same building. Allow around 20 minutes.
Results
Your results are discussed with you during the visit where appropriate, and you receive a written report that your GP can go through with you. If anything needs a closer look, we will recommend booking our Friday one-stop clinic, where an ultrasound or a biopsy can be carried out as clinically indicated.

Your examination is with a woman GP, your imaging is reported by a consultant breast radiologist, and a consultant breast surgeon takes over if you need anything further.

Dr Adaeze Ifezulike MBE
Carries out the breast examination and arranges your mammogram. A GP with over two decades of clinical experience and a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 for services to public health.
Dr Benedict Gandakusuma
Reports your mammogram, including breast density measurement and AI-assisted 3D analysis. Over 15 years of breast imaging experience across the UK and Europe.
Mr Ahmed Mustafa
Leads the Friday One-Stop Breast Clinic. If your mammogram raises a question, he sees you there for an ultrasound and, if clinically indicated, a biopsy on the same day.
Frequently asked questions
No. A mammogram does need a doctor’s referral, and that referral is part of this appointment. Nothing is needed from your own GP.
This routine check is for women 40+ who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months. If you are under 40, or you have a breast symptom, call us on 01224 515 254 and we will book you the right appointment.
Allow around an hour for the examination and the mammogram together. There is nothing to prepare beforehand, though it helps to avoid talcum powder and deodorant on the day, because they can show up on the images.
Yes. Free parking on site at Westhill.
Your results are discussed with you during the visit, where appropriate, and you receive a written report that your GP can go through with you. We can also send the report to your GP with your consent.
If your mammogram raises a question, we arrange further tests in the same building. Our One-Stop Breast Clinic on Fridays is led by a consultant breast surgeon and provides ultrasound and, if clinically indicated, a biopsy on the day. Those tests are charged separately.
This check is for routine screening. If you have noticed a lump, pain, or a change to the skin or nipple, book the One-Stop Breast Clinic on Friday instead, or call 01224 515 254 and we will arrange it for you.
Not for this offer. The September price of £220 is self-pay only. Our breast clinic is approved for Bupa UK insured patients and we accept most major and international insurers at the standard price, so call us on 01224 515 254 if you would rather claim than take the discount.
