Ovarian cancer symptoms are easy to mistake for something else
The main symptoms look like everyday stomach or bladder problems, so many women put off getting them checked. Get them looked at if you have them on most days, or if they have lasted three weeks or more.
Symptoms to get checked
Worth booking if
- You have one or more of these symptoms and want them checked by a doctor
- Ovarian or breast cancer runs in your family and you want to talk it through
- You have been told you have an ovarian cyst and want it scanned again
- You want a doctor’s opinion and a scan without needing a referral
Sudden or severe pain needs urgent care
If you have sudden, severe pain in your tummy or pelvis, do not wait for a booked appointment. Call NHS 24 on 111, or go to A&E if the pain is very bad.
What your ovarian check includes
A 15 minute consultation with a female GP
Your GP asks about your symptoms, your periods and your family history, and examines you.
An internal pelvic ultrasound
Carried out by our sonographer, for the clearest view of your ovaries and womb. If you cannot have an internal scan, we scan over your tummy instead.
A written scan report
The findings of your scan in writing, which we can send to your own GP with your consent.
No referral is needed from your own GP.

Who you will see
Your consultation is with one of our two female GPs, and your scan with our sonographer.
Dr Adaeze Ifezulike MBE

Dr Atiya Moosa
A practising NHS GP in Aberdeen who tutors medical students, with six months of hospital gynaecology in her training.
Frequently asked questions
Anything else, call us on 01224 515 254.
No. There is no test that reliably screens for ovarian cancer in women without symptoms, which is why there is no NHS screening programme for it. This appointment gives you a GP’s assessment of your symptoms and family history and a scan of your ovaries and womb. A scan can find cysts and other changes that need following up, but it cannot rule out ovarian cancer on its own.
No. CA125 is a blood test that is often used alongside a scan when someone has symptoms. Your GP can tell you whether it would help in your case and arrange it, charged separately and quoted before you agree to it.
Yes. Your GP can go through your family history with you and tell you whether you could be eligible for genetic testing for genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, which the NHS offers to people at higher risk.
The sonographer gently passes a slim, lubricated probe a short way into the vagina, which gives a clear view of the ovaries and womb. You will be asked to empty your bladder first. It should not hurt, though some women find it uncomfortable. The sonographer explains the scan and asks your consent before starting, and you can ask for a chaperone.
The sonographer will scan your ovaries and womb over your tummy instead. Let us know when you book, because an external scan needs a full bladder.
No. You book directly on this page. If you would like us to send your scan report to your own GP, we can do that with your consent.
Yes. Free parking on site at Westhill.
You can move your appointment to another available date. If you cancel it, the booking is non-refundable, because it is paid in advance at the reduced price.
Not for this offer. The £350 price is self-pay only. We accept most major and international insurers for GP appointments and scans at the standard price, so call us on 01224 515 254 if you would rather claim.
Yes. The facility is registered and regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
