James is a Specialist Lower Limb Surgeon, with strong areas of interest in the non-surgical treatments of joint pain, including injection therapies, bracing treatments, and the evaluation of new biological therapies. The has a broad range of skills in general orthopaedics and the care of musculoskeletal disease.
Although not available at ROC Private Clinic just yet, James has a broad surgical practice including soft tissue knee reconstruction, both primary and revision knee arthroplasty, primary hip arthroplasty and general orthopaedics.
He trained in London and Glasgow, with further specialist fellowship training in Edinburgh. In 2000 he undertook a travelling fellowship in North America. James has been working in Aberdeen since 2001.
The area of orthopaedic surgery that James works in is constantly changing, as research and new techniques bring improvements in treatments. James engages with these new developments to bring the best in evidence based and proven therapies to patients, along with careful introduction of newer treatment options.
James has offered his patients Conformis customised knee replacement technology since 2018, making him the most experienced Conformis surgeon in Scotland.
He and his colleagues now can offer a UK training centre for other orthopaedic surgeons. Conformis is a bespoke knee replacement, individually manufactured, based on a CT scan of your knee, compared to an off-the-shelf knee which comes in a standard range of sizes.
Each implant is designed to provide a customised fit to your knee, helping reduce sizing compromises that can lead to long-term pain after surgery. The implant restores the natural shape of your anatomy which could lead to a more stable and natural feeling knee. Traditional knee replacement surgery can have a satisfaction rate of around 80% however studies on Conformis have shown this to be as high as 95%.
Away from work, James enjoys hill walking and attempts to garden.
