Early Pregnancy Scan (6 to 11 weeks)
Confirms viability and gives an approximate gestational age, with an assessment of the womb and ovaries. Reassurance in early pregnancy, particularly if you have had pain or bleeding. An internal scan may be offered for a clearer view. Please attend with a full bladder.
Dating Scan (11 to 14 weeks)
Measures your baby to give an estimated due date, confirms viability, and checks whether you are expecting one baby or more. Includes a first-trimester anatomy check. This scan does not include chromosomal screening. Please attend with a full bladder.
NIPT Screening (from 10 weeks)
A screening test from a simple maternal blood sample for the common chromosomal conditions (Down’s, Edwards’ and Patau’s syndromes), combined with a first-trimester scan. This is a screening test, not a diagnosis. Results are discussed with you.
Group B Strep Test
A simple test carried out in a nurse appointment to check for Group B Streptococcus in later pregnancy, so that a plan can be made for your birth if needed.

It depends on how many weeks pregnant you are: an Early Pregnancy Scan from 6 weeks for viability, and a Dating Scan from 11 to 14 weeks. NIPT screening is available from 10 weeks. If you are not sure, call us and we will help you choose.
Most scans are carried out externally, across the tummy. In very early pregnancy an internal (transvaginal) scan can give a clearer view. If this would help, it is explained to you and your consent is taken first. You can decline, and we will discuss this at your appointment.
