Mole Mapping Service

Mole mapping is one of the most effective ways to detect melanoma and other skin cancers early.

Identifying skin cancers earlier improves outcome. For example, malignant melanoma, the most dangerous of skin cancers frequently presents as a new mole, or a change in the appearance of an existing mole. If picked up and treated early, 99% of patients will survive 5 years. If detected late, this figure drops dramatically to 25%.

As part of our mole mapping service, our experienced Dermatologist will assess every mole and take highly detailed images using our dermoscopic imaging equipment, storing this information for future comparison. We recommend that this assessment be repeated annually to monitor for any suspicious changes in skin cancer.

Who should consider mole mapping?

  • Have a family history of melanoma
  • Have a personal history of skin cancer
  • Have new or changing moles
  • Have fair skin
  • Have a skin that easily burns
  • Have multiple moles
  • Have a suppressed immune system
  • Are exposed to significant sunlight (working or living abroad or working outdoors)

What to expect when attending an appointment?

If you are new to our clinic, you will be asked to complete a registration form on arrival. The doctor will then see you and take a detailed history of your skin and general health.

An examination of the skin will then take place, and in doing so, a dermoscope (skin examination under a microscope) may be used.

A chaperone service is available, but please feel free to bring a member of your family or friend if you wish.

If a biopsy or other procedure may be required, these will take place during your first consultation, unless deemed unsuitable at the time.

Minor Surgery skin lesion removal also takes place during this clinic.

A detailed personalised management plan for your condition shall be put in place by the doctor before the end of the consultation. If you require any prescribed treatments these will be arranged.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — you can book directly with our specialist dermatologists. A GP referral is not required.

Mole mapping is a detailed photographic and dermoscopic record of your moles. By comparing images over time, our dermatologists can detect early changes that may indicate skin cancer.

We usually recommend an annual mole mapping review. Patients at higher risk of melanoma — such as those with many moles, fair skin, or a family history of skin cancer — may benefit from more frequent checks.

Yes. If appropriate, our dermatologists can carry out minor skin surgery, including mole, lesion, or skin tag removal, during your consultation.

We treat acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, skin rashes and infections, hives (urticaria), sun-related skin changes, hair loss, nail problems, and skin lesions including suspicious moles and skin cancers.

Mole mapping is recommended if you have multiple moles, a personal or family history of melanoma, fair skin that burns easily, a suppressed immune system, or significant sun exposure (e.g., outdoor work or living abroad).

Your dermatologist will take a detailed history, examine your skin (often using a dermoscope), and discuss findings. If needed, a biopsy or mole removal may be performed the same day. You’ll also receive a personalised treatment plan before you leave.

Appointments usually last up to 30 minutes, giving enough time for a full assessment and discussion of your treatment plan.

Book an appointment as soon as possible. Early detection makes treatment more effective — in the case of melanoma, survival rates are over 99% if caught early.

I had minor surgery with Sathis Wijemanne last week, and he was excellent. Sathis was very friendly and explained everything clearly before the surgery took place. I couldn't believe how efficient and painless the entire process was. I would highly recommend Sathis to anyone looking to have a minor surgical procedure done.
