ADHD is increasingly being diagnosed in adults, including people working in demanding and safety-critical occupations. NHS data show that 190,000 UK adults were prescribed ADHD medication in 2024/25, up 24.3 per cent in a single year, with the steepest rises among adults rather than children. In a region where one in every 30 jobs in Scotland is in offshore energy, this raises an important question for offshore workers:
Can someone with ADHD safely work offshore?
The current OEUK Medical Guidelines & Examiners Manual – Issue 8.1 provides the framework used when assessing medical fitness for offshore work in the UK energy sector.
Why does ADHD matter offshore?
Offshore work can involve long shifts, working at height, machinery, emergency situations, and working in remote environments. Workers may need to maintain concentration, follow procedures accurately, and respond quickly when circumstances change.
ADHD can affect areas such as:
- Concentration and sustained attention
- Organization and planning
- Impulse control
- Time management
- Working memory
- Response to distractions
This is why offshore fitness is assessed against the demands of the role rather than against a diagnosis alone, and why occupational health assessments for the energy sector look closely at functional ability.
Is a diagnosis enough to decide whether I am fit for offshore work?
For an offshore worker with ADHD, the assessment should consider how the condition affects their actual ability to work safely.
This may include looking at:
- Current symptoms
- Treatment and medication
- Response to treatment
- Any medication side effects
- Previous work performance
- Safety-critical responsibilities
- Any history of workplace incidents or difficulties
- The demands of the individual’s particular offshore role
Previous successful experience in a comparable safety-critical environment can be particularly useful when considering functional ability.
What about ADHD medication?
Some people with ADHD take stimulant medication, while others use non-stimulant treatments. Medication itself does not provide the complete answer to fitness. The clinician may need to consider whether treatment is stable, whether symptoms are adequately controlled and whether there are any side effects that could affect safety.
Where required under the OEUK framework, additional clinical or objective evidence may be needed to support the assessment.
Can I work offshore if I have ADHD?
Having ADHD does not automatically mean that someone cannot work offshore.
The key consideration is whether the individual’s symptoms, treatment, and functional ability are compatible with the safety requirements of their role. OEUK guidance provides a structured framework for making this assessment, with consideration given to functional impairment, safe performance, and the demands of offshore work.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work offshore if I have ADHD?
Having ADHD does not automatically prevent offshore work. The assessment considers whether your symptoms, treatment, and functional ability are compatible with the safety requirements of your particular role.
Does an ADHD diagnosis alone decide the outcome?
No. The assessment looks at how the condition affects your actual ability to work safely, including current symptoms, treatment, response to treatment, previous work performance and the demands of your role.
Can I work offshore while taking ADHD medication?
Medication does not decide fitness on its own. The clinician may consider whether treatment is stable, whether symptoms are adequately controlled, and whether any side effects could affect safety.
Does previous offshore experience count?
It can. Previous successful experience in a comparable safety-critical environment is useful evidence when considering functional ability.
