What is it?

Measuring the damage to your arteries usually requires highly technical and expensive procedures. With the AngioDefender®, the damage to your vessels can accurately be assessed in minutes at a fraction of the cost of the traditional investigations.

Cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes) remains a major cause of death worldwide. In general, cardiovascular disease is a result of build-up of fatty plaques in the arteries (a process called atherosclerosis).  Over time, this causes damage and can lead to narrowing or blockages in arteries – causing heart attacks and/or strokes.

Endothelium is the name given to the lining of our blood vessels. This lining is essential in helping to regulate the flow of blood through the arteries as well as controlling the flow of other substances in and out of the bloodstream.  It is now known that damage to the endothelium is an important early step in the development of atherosclerosis.  The AngioDefender® works by measuring the damage to the endothelium, thereby providing an early warning system for the development of cardiovascular disease.

What causes endothelial damage?

There are a number of risk factors that can damage the blood vessel lining. Some risk factors are non-modifiable, for example increasing age, ethnicity, family history and sex. However, many risk factors are considered modifiable and include poor diet, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and smoking to name a few.

How does AngioDefender® work?

Using a specialised blood pressure cuff, the system runs through a series of inflations and deflations to calculate how the brachial artery (the main blood vessel running through the upper arm) responds to the changes in pressure. This process is called flow-mediated dilation.

The system records the different readings and at the end of the 20-minutes process, a percentage of FMD is calculated (%FMD) to give a score.  A low score indicates increasing cardiovascular risk, whilst a high score means a lower cardiovascular risk.

Other information is used in estimating your vascular age, such as your blood lipid profile and the blood sugar levels.

How does AngioDefender® help me?

We use the information provided by the AngioDefender to develop a personalised plan to help you reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This may include lifestyle and diet modifications, smoking cessation or medications.

Repeating the test at 6 or 12 months after changes have been made, you can expect to see an improvement in your vascular age.
